I became a licensed ham in 1972 to facilitate telephone patch calls to my wife Pat from aboard ship in the Pacific during my 28 year Navy career.  I was fortunate to operate my own equipment, a Kenwood TS-520 and trap vertical antenna, from five Navy ships.
